GCUMM President Bishop James Swanson Sr. invites us to pray a prayer first offered by Thomas Merton. Recalling the acrimony experienced at General Conference, he says, “Our desire to win must never be greater than the desire to please Jesus.”
Gil Hanke recalls a moment when General Conference “could have unraveled as some delegates prepared to walk off the floor.” He notes that we have differences, but “we are all united” as we receive Communion elements at the Lord’s Table.
Steve Nailor encourages leaders of UM Men to develop 4-year plans that can be reviewed and revised annually. He says a “Connect and Equip” training program will soon be released for local church, district, conference and jurisdictional leaders.
Larry Coppock shares Tom Black’s “six best doctors in the world: sunlight, rest, exercise, diet, self-confidence and friends” The director of scouting ministry adds “prayer” to that list as the item “that lays the foundation for all the rest.”
Mark Lubbock quotes an article that states, “People select friends who support their beliefs and actions.” He encourages us to choose friends who reflect the Word and not the world. “Having Godly friends takes work prayer and investment, but it is worth it.”
Jim Boesch offers a four-step process to help establish what role God wants us to play in serving and building His Kingdom. We are invited to list personal skills, ways we relate to others and our vision of a perfect world to establish a “personal mission statement.”
