Ministering To Men Along The Elizabeth River

Great Bridge United Methodist Church, Chesapeake, VA

Great Bridge United Methodist Men

At Great Bridge, we continue to make one of our high priorities the task of getting more men to participate in our UMM programs. One way we are trying to accomplish this is to offer more varied activities to pique the interest of men who have different interests. We are also contacting the new men of the church and inviting them to find an activity that interests them and get involved.

The activities we are trying to offer include small group as well as larger group opportunities to allow our men a wider range of things to choose from and with the idea that in a small group, men can bond with each other and become more faithful.

Highlighted Activities for 2012
  • Provided one $1,000 scholarship and six $500 scholarships from the Jim Early Scholarship Fund for members of our church who are attending college this year. These scholarships were supported by several different fundraisers
  • In conjunction with the United Methodist Women and the Mission Committee we prepared and served a meal at the Park Place Food Ministry program
  • We conducted several Men’s Bible studies during the year
  • Several of our members help unload the monthly food delivery from the Food Bank at Park Place UM
  • We help the Boy Scouts deliver the mulch they sell each spring
  • Our men participated in mission trips to El Salvador and Hands of Hope in West Virginia
  • Several of our members actively work with Faith Works Coalition doing home repairs for people who can’t afford to do it themselves
  • We supported Heart Haven by helping with maintenance at the two homes in our district
  • We help with Get Smart, a tutoring program for high school students
  • We prepare breakfast after the Easter Sunrise service

Our business meeting is held on the third Sunday each month at 6:45 a.m. After a hearty breakfast we have an outside speaker tell us about their organization. In October our breakfast was on a Saturday to accommodate Randy Forbes schedule. He brought us up-to-date with some of the things that are going on in Washington.

With God steering our vessel, the men of Great Bridge have been truly blessed this year. Our commitment to serve and give him the glory is clearly exemplified in what we were able to accomplish throughout the year. We are excited about what God has in store for us in 2013 and know that if we allow him to lead and direct we will have another great year.
